COST GUIDE · SHOPIFY
By Joshua Jackai, Founder and Lead Designer · Updated September 2026
Shopify pricing has three layers that get confused with each other: what you pay Shopify, what you pay for apps, and what you pay a designer. They are separate decisions with separate levers, and only the third is negotiable by scope.
Key takeaways
Professional build: $3,250 to $15,000, driven mostly by theme customization versus custom templates.
Shopify subscription starts at $39 per month on Basic, with Shopify and Advanced above it; Plus is a different conversation entirely.
Apps are the cost nobody budgets. Mature stores routinely run $50 to $300 per month in subscriptions.
Transaction fees fall as you move up plans. If you are paying Shopify Payments, the card rate matters more than the plan price.
A migration from WooCommerce carries product, variant, customer, and order data, which is why those projects sit at the long end.

What moves it
Shopify plan
$39 to $399 /mo
Staff accounts, reporting, card rates
Apps
$50 to $300 /mo

Design and build

Theme customization versus custom templates

Product count, variants, order history
This single fork explains most of the price range. A well-chosen premium theme, customized properly, produces an excellent store for a fraction of a custom build, and it stays upgradeable. A custom storefront earns its cost when your merchandising, bundling, or brand experience genuinely cannot be expressed in a theme.
Most brands under roughly $5M in revenue are better served by an expertly customized theme plus real conversion work than by a bespoke build with no budget left for optimization.

How much does Shopify cost per month?
Plans start at $39 per month on Basic and rise through Shopify and Advanced. Add apps, which realistically cost $50 to $300 per month on an established store.
Is a custom Shopify theme worth it?
Only when a premium theme genuinely cannot express your merchandising or brand experience. For most brands, customizing a strong theme and spending the remainder on conversion work returns more.
How much does it cost to migrate from WooCommerce to Shopify?
It falls inside the same build tiers, because product, variant, customer, and order data migration is part of the scope rather than an add-on.
Do I need a developer for Shopify?
Not for launch. You need one when you want behaviour a theme does not offer, or when app conflicts start costing you conversions.
Tell us your product count, your current platform, and what is not converting. You will get a scope and a number, not a discovery process.
